Refactoring centralized code into independent microservices trades code complexity for network unpredictability. Workflows that previously triggered simple internal methods suddenly require coordinated remote requests, each introducing separate latency budgets, retry loops, and partition hazards.

Reliability math tolerates zero optimism in distributed environments. A sequence touching ten microservices with individual availability of 99.9% reduces overall request success to less than 99%. Consumers never see how clean your service map looks; they suffer the multiplied failure rate of all chained services.

Inspect the call trees of critical traffic paths before creating new service seams. Pruning a single network boundary delivers greater resilience benefits than any amount of sophisticated client-side retry logic.
